Leisure Travel has Returned

With the July 4th weekend approaching, new data from the MAPP Report, powered by myDigitalOffice (MDO), shows the hospitality industry continues to rebound. Hotel occupancy in the United States is nearly double the level of what we saw this time last year for the same holiday weekend in 2020.

In the weeks leading up to July 4th in 2020, US occupancy for the holiday weekend hovered around 10-15% before peaking at 25% at the one-week out mark. The weekend finished at just over 32% occupancy.

As of Wednesday, June 29, US hotels are nearly half booked. This year, occupancy eclipsed 25% five weeks out from this coming holiday weekend. This surge in demand has resulted in ADR holding strong this year, after last year’s steady drop each week leading into the holiday weekend.

We are also seeing steady increases in Occupancy, RevPAR, and ADR across all classes. As of June 29, 2021, midscale hotels are currently leading the pack with over 50% occupancy, although all other classes are on the cusp of that same level.

These forward-looking hotel performance metrics suggest that leisure travel in the US will be back to 2019 levels in short order. Other outside indicators support this theory as well, as Delta Airlines recently announced a plan to hire 1,000 new pilots to support the surge in demand back to pre-pandemic levels.

This continued growth and strengthening of travel will help our industry rebound and comes back stronger than ever.
